Tonight, convicted felon Donald Trump will take the stage to debate President Joe Biden. Desperate to distract from his multiple ongoing criminal cases and felony convictions, Trump will stop at nothing to repeat the same debunked lies that led to a failed impeachment which found not a single shred of wrongdoing from President Biden.

DEBUNKED REPUBLICAN LIE: President Biden Was Involved In His Son Hunter’s Foreign Business Dealings

  • Key Points:
    • House Republicans’ Second Impeachment Hearing Turned Up No Evidence of Wrongdoing. At their second impeachment hearing, both witnesses’ testimonies were filled with lies, contradictions, and Russian disinformation, and they utterly failed to produce any evidence implicating President Biden. Even right-wing media was unmoved. A Newsmax host said, “It kind of seems like you’re chasing your tail at this point.” A Fox News host admitted, “It just feels like they keep doing the same hearing over and over again,” while another Fox News legal analyst confessed, “I do think maybe people are becoming a bit tired of all of this.”
    • House Republicans’ First Impeachment Hearing Found No Evidence of Wrongdoing. At their first impeachment inquiry hearing, Republicans’ own witnesses were exposed as GOP partisans who had no evidence to support impeaching President Biden. Two of Republicans’ three witnesses directly testified that there is no evidence to support impeachment. The third was exposed for misrepresenting the name “Biden” in her oral testimony, referring only to Hunter Biden instead of President Biden, and all three witnesses testified that they did not come to present any first-hand witness accounts of crimes committed by President Biden. As the fourth witness at the hearing testified, “If that’s what exists as a basis for this inquiry, it is not sufficient.”
    • Senate GOP Investigation: No Evidence Joe Biden Was Involved In Hunter Biden’s Foreign Business Dealings. “An election-year investigation by Senate Republicans into corruption allegations against Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his son, Hunter, involving Ukraine found no evidence of improper influence or wrongdoing by the former vice president, closing out an inquiry its leaders had hoped would tarnish the Democratic presidential nominee. […] But an 87-page report summing up the findings, released jointly on Wednesday by the Senate Homeland Security and Finance Committees, contained no evidence that the elder Mr. Biden improperly manipulated American policy toward Ukraine or committed any other misdeed.     • Fact-Checkers Found “No Role For Joe Biden” In Hunter Biden’s Business. In 2020, a former Hunter Biden associate went on record saying: I would like to clear up any speculation that former Vice President Biden was involved with the 2017 discussions about our potential business structure. I am unaware of any involvement at anytime [sic] of the former Vice President,” leading the right-leaning Wall Street Journal to conclude that corporate records showed “no role for Joe Biden” in Hunter’s business.     • Fact-Checkers: No Evidence That Joe Biden Was Involved In Foreign Business Dealings. In 2022, Washington Post investigators conducted a review of government records, court documents, bank statements, and emails allegedly stemming from Hunter Biden’s laptop, finding: “The Post did not find evidence that Joe Biden personally benefited from or knew details about the transactions with CEFC, which took place after he had left the vice presidency and before he announced his intentions to run for the White House in 2020.” [The Washington Post, 3/30/22]

DEBUNKED REPUBLICAN LIE: The Biden Family Illegally Received $20-30 Million From Foreign Adversaries

According to the Washington Post, “A close reading of the memos, however, finds that only about $7 million can be directly attributed to Biden family members, mostly Hunter, while the rest went to ‘associates,’ according to the memos.” [Washington Post, 8/17/23]
    • House Republicans’ Own Report Showed No Evidence of Bribes Paid To President Biden. “After three months, a period that clearly included more assessments of income received by Hunter Biden (though a lot of the $20 million was already reported), there’s not a whiff of the alleged $5 million paid to Joe Biden by Zlochevsky. It’s less than a phantom.” [Washington Post, 8/9/23]
    • Senate Republicans Found No Evidence Of Corruption or Misconduct. “A partisan investigation conducted by Senate Republicans, whose report was released this month, alleged that Elena Baturina, a Russian businesswoman and the wife of late Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov, sent $3.5 million in 2014 to a firm called Rosemont Seneca Thornton, and that the payment was identified as a “consultancy agreement.” The report did not provide any further details about the transaction. […] Neither the Senate report nor Trump have provided any evidence that the payment was corrupt or that Hunter Biden committed any wrongdoing.” [CNN, Accessed 6/24/24]
    • Republicans Claim That Hunter Biden Laundered Money Through 21 Illegitimate Shell Companies. Yet All Listed Companies Were Found To Have Legitimate Business Interests Or Lacked Ties to Hunter Biden. “Comer often suggests that the Biden family used these so-called shell companies to launder money; in his telling, such companies served no legitimate function. But that claim is undercut by the list of 21 companies that appear in the second staff memo. Virtually all of the companies (many of which now are defunct) had legitimate business interests. Others had clearly identified business investments. Digging through the records, we find only three whose business purpose remains vague; one (Rosemont Seneca Global Risk Services, LLC) may not even be related to Hunter Biden, according to an email found in Hunter Biden’s laptop. The memos do not list any payments that flowed through these three companies. […] In his congressional interview, Archer said: ‘I don’t know what the specifics of the wire were, but it was — quite frankly, it was not supposed to go there, but that’s where it went.’ The committee staff allege that some of the $3.5 million went to fund the replacement vehicle for the Chinese investment. Archer, in his interview, said he did not know if that was the case, but he insisted that Baturina was a Rosemont Realty client not connected to Hunter Biden. DEBUNKED REPUBLICAN LIE: President Biden Made Foreign Policy Decisions Benefitting Hunter’s Foreign Business Dealings

  • Key Points:
    • Witness Testimony: President Biden Did Not Alter U.S. Policy In Ukraine Due To His Son. In an interview with Sally Painter, chief operating officer of the firm representing Ukrainian energy company Burisma, Painter testified in 2020 that Joe Biden did not alter U.S. policy in Ukraine due to his son’s involvement with Burisma or in any manner to benefit his son, repeatedly stating that the false allegation “undermines our democracy.”
    • Fact-Checkers: Ukrainian Prosecutor Viktor Shokin Was Not Removed At Then-Vice President Biden’s Behest As A Favor To Hunter Biden. House Republicans have long suggested that, while serving as Vice President, Joe Biden worked to fire a corrupt Ukrainian prosecutor to benefit Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. But independent fact–checkers have rejected this claim over the years: “Based on our research, the claim that Joe Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion from Ukraine to save his son’s job is FALSE. The then-vice president leveraged aid dollars to persuade the country to oust its top prosecutor as part of anti-corruption efforts endorsed by other international players that were unrelated to his son, Hunter Biden.” [USA Today, 10/21/20] 
    • Official U.S. Policy Supported The Corrupt Prosecutor’s Removal. A State Department memo dating back to November 2015 indicated that official U.S. policy supported removing Shokin. The House Foreign Affairs Committee reviewed thousands of documents produced by a Trump-era State Department investigation and found that American diplomats were pursuing “a strong policy of encouraging Ukraine to reform and tackle corruption. A former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, Kurt Volker, also repudiated the allegations in 2019.
    • The Corrupt Prosecutor’s Removal Was Widely Supported Domestically And Internationally. Many European officials, Republicans in Congress at the time, and international anti-corruption organizations supported the move as well. Former Ukrainian Petro Poroshenko himself, who was head of state at the time, has also refuted Comer’s allegations. He condemned the conspiracy theory on Fox News, calling the corrupt prosecutor a “completely crazy person,” and said, “There’s something wrong with him.” Ukraine’s deputy chief of mission George Kent debunked the allegations in 2019, as did former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

DEBUNKED REPUBLICAN LIE: Evidence of Bribery Was Supposedly Withheld By the FBI

  • Key Points: 
    • House Republicans Chased Russian Disinformation – Despite Serious Credibility Concerns and A Lack of Evidence. House Republicans centered their impeachment probe around allegations that President Biden took a bribe, primarily based on an FBI form FD-1023 dating back to 2020 that documented an informant’s secondhand account of a supposed conversation between officials at Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Republicans hyped this account and boosted the informant’s credibility time and again. Oversight Chair James Comer hyped Smirnov’s lies and boosted his credibility time and again: Comer spent nearly a year praising Smirnov as one of the FBI’s “most respected,” “most effective,” “most credible,” “most trusted, highest paid,” informants. As independent fact-checkers concluded, “Smirnov’s allegations that Biden accepted a $5 million bribe while vice president were a key element of Republicans’ Biden investigation.”
    • House Republicans’ Key Source Was Arrested For Making False Statements About President Biden and His Son. Earlier this year, a federal court unsealed a two-count indictment against the informant, who was revealed to be Alexander Smirnov, charging him with making false statements accusing President Biden and his son Hunter of corruption and bribery. 
    • House Republicans’ Key Source Was Exposed For Spreading Russian Disinformation At The Behest of The Trump Campaign. After his arrest, Smirnov was exposed for meeting with and being fed information by Russian intelligence officials. Later reporting revealed that he received over half a million dollars from a U.S. firm tied to Trump’s business associates during the same year he began feeding the FBI lies about the Biden family. 
    • Fact-Checkers Raised Doubts About The Credibility of House Republicans’ Key Source For Years. Journalists have found that serious doubts about Smirnov’s credibility had been raised nearly a decade ago after Smirnov was accused of lying in an earlier criminal case – his credibility issues may have even led to a sharp reduction in sentencing recommendations by federal prosecutors.
    • The Trump Administration Already Investigated and Rejected House Republicans’ Key Source. The Trump administration’s Department of Justice already reviewed the FD-1023 and signed-off on dropping the investigation into the allegation after it was found to “not be supported by facts.”
    • Witness Testimony: Bribery Allegations Are False. In a witness interview, Hunter Biden’s business associate Devon Archer also explicitly disagreed with House Republicans’ claims that the former Vice President was supposedly “bribed” by Zlochevsky, dismissing the allegations as mere bragging, exaggeration, and “fibs” that are common among Ukrainian businessmen.

Trump himself appointed Weiss, saying the Delaware prosecutor “shared his vision,” and Congressional Republicans, including James Comer, supported Weiss’ nomination in 2017.
    • Weiss Had Ultimate Authority Over the Case and Has Never Been Influenced By Political Considerations. Weiss—a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney—wrote on June 7th that he had ultimate authority and was never influenced by political considerations: “I want to make clear that, as the Attorney General has stated, I have been granted ultimate authority over this matter, including responsibility for deciding where, when, and whether to file charges and for making decisions necessary to preserve the integrity of the prosecution, consistent with federal law, the Principles of Federal Prosecution, and Departmental regulations. DEBUNKED REPUBLICAN LIE: So-Called Whistleblower Evidence of Weaponization of the Federal Government In Favor of President Biden

    • Republicans Blatantly Misrepresented Whistleblowers, Then Refused to Produce Evidence Substantiating Their Claims. Last year, Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) blatantly misrepresented witnesses in his investigation, claiming he connected with “four whistleblowers” as part of his investigation. But after Comer hyped the so-called whistleblowers on Fox News and Breitbart, his Democratic House Oversight Committee members called him out for misrepresenting:
      • the number of individuals (two were identified, not four)
      • their status (not official whistleblowers)

    • Republicans Have Consistently Failed To Produce Any Evidence of So-Called Weaponization of the Federal Government. Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) claimed one of his whistleblowers was suspended from the FBI for performing his job, including conducting case-related research. But according to the FBI, Jordan’s so-called whistleblower refused to actually do his job by refusing to conduct open-source research into a Jan. 6 suspect’s potential engagement with criminal activity or terrorism. His supervisor even testified he recommended removing him from a probe “to protect the integrity of the investigation” because the whistleblower made “unsubstantiated allegations.”
    • Republicans’ Key “Whistleblower” Allegations Have Been Debunked By At Least Six Other Witnesses Questioned By The House GOP. At least six other witnesses brought in for questioning by Oversight Republicans – including a supervisor at the IRS’ Criminal Investigation division and the division’s director of field operations, three current and former FBI officials, and a longtime bookkeeper for the Biden family – have testified that the so-called whistleblowers’ claims are “false and misleading.”

Hur is a registered Republican who has donated hundreds of dollars to national Republican political campaigns. He joined the Department of Justice during the Trump administration and was appointed by President Trump to serve as a U.S. attorney in Maryland from 2018 to 2021.
    • Hur Hired A GOP Operative To Help Him Prepare Testimony on His Report. Ahead of his testimony before Congress, Hur reached out to former Trump DOJ colleague Sarah Isgur to help him prepare. Isgur, who publicly lied about the reports findings, was the spokesperson for Trump’s first Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and was a key voice defending Trump’s Muslim travel ban and “zero tolerance” immigration policy that separated thousands of children from their parents. She served as the primary DOJ spokesperson on the Mueller investigation for both Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein. The longtime Republican operative has also worked for several Republican presidential campaigns, a GOP Senate campaign, and the Republican National Committee.
