Congressional Integrity Project July 24 – July 28, 2023 Summary

Jul 28, 2023

This week, Congressional Integrity Project focused on pushing back on House Republicans’ bogus impeachment stunts. The increased push on impeachment from Kevin McCarthy and other Republicans comes after talks with Donald Trump about how Congressional Republicans could use their positions to help him.

Congressional Integrity Project continued to go after Republicans as they wrapped up their July “ESG Month” series which included holding hearings and introducing bills attacking responsible investing. Rather than focusing on addressing issues that actually matter to their constituents, like the economy, health care, and gun violence, the GOP Congress is focused on holding bogus hearings attacking investors for being forward-thinking with their investment strategies.

CIP sent out 10 rapid response products, including statements, fact sheets, and roundups.

House Republicans increased their push to impeach President Biden this week at the orders of the real Speaker of the House Donald Trump. Kevin McCarthy floated the idea of an impeachment inquiry after talking with Trump before doing another one of his signature flip flops.

And it is not just President Biden that House Republicans are going after with bogus impeachment talks. Jim Jordan and his Judiciary Committee held a hearing to attack Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas following months of talk about them wanting to impeach him.

House Republicans wrapped up their “ESG Month” where they pushed the MAGA agenda by attacking environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investment strategies. Many members also had a financial motivation for attacking ESG as oil, gas, and dirty energy related PACs have funded their campaigns.

A House Oversight Subcommittee held a hearing on UFOs this week and CIP used that opportunity to hit Republicans about not having any evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden.

House Republicans held yet another hearing designed to attack public education and school closures during the Covid-19 pandemic.
