Congressional Integrity Project August 7 – August 11, 2023 Summary

Aug 11, 2023

This week, Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics (“OCE”) requesting that the OCE immediately begin an investigation into Representative James Comer’s statements made about Devon Archer’s testimony to the House Oversight Committee. Since Archer’s testimony last week, Comer has appeared on Fox News and other right-wing media outlets numerous times, claiming the testimony proves wrongdoing by President Biden when in reality, the testimony does the exact opposite. Comer also lied, claiming he called into the meeting and that he was listening on the phone, which would’ve been impossible given his appearances in Kentucky and no mentions of him in the official transcript. His own spokesman later claimed Comer was in contact with the staff at the testimony rather than repeating Comer’s lies.

Congressional Integrity Project also launched a new paid digital ad campaign in eighteen Republican districts across the country. The ad campaign is a kickoff to a larger campaign that calls out the Representatives for allowing the House Leadership’s bogus agenda of political stunts to continue while ignoring the most important issues to the American people, all to defend their disgraced former president and harm President Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Over the past seven months, these members of Congress have done absolutely nothing to restrain House leadership and their MAGA colleagues from going down a rabbit hole of bogus investigations. They are ignoring the important priorities of the American people, such as lowering costs, expanding healthcare access, addressing student loan debt, and battling climate change. Not coincidentally, all of these investigations and impeachment attempts are happening at the same time as their disgraced former president, Donald Trump, faces multiple indictments.

The ads will run and have a significant online presence in the following districts: Don Bacon (NE-2), Lori Chavez-Deremer (OR-5), Juan Ciscomani (AZ-6), Anthony D’Esposito (NY-4), John Duarte (CA-13), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), Mike Garcia (CA-27), Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-7), Jen Kiggans (VA-2), Young Kim (CA-40), Nick LaLota (NY-1), Mike Lawler (NY-17), Marc Molinaro (NY-19), George Santos (NY-3), David Schweikert (AZ-1), Michelle Steel (CA-45), David Valadao (CA-22), and Brandon Williams (NY-22).

James Comer’s lies are catching up to him – he can’t stop lying about Devon Archer’s testimony.

James Comer had another horrible week after releasing belly-flop bank records that don’t contain a single shred of evidence tying President Biden to wrongdoing in his family’s businesses.

Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics (“OCE”) requesting an immediate investigation into Representative James Comer’s statements regarding Devon Archer’s testimony to the House Oversight Committee.

Vulnerable Republicans there isn’t enough evidence to impeach President Biden.

Republicans wasted no time calling Weiss’s integrity into question, after being appointed special counsel status in the Hunter Biden probe, despite Congressional Republicans, including James Comer, supporting Weiss’ nomination in 2017.

The Guardian: ‘What about Hunter Biden?’: how the president’s son became a Republican target – again. “In a press call hosted by the Congressional Integrity Project, Dan Goldman, a Democratic congressman, said: ‘This is not an investigation into the Bidens, no matter what they say. This is an investigation into Hunter Biden and they’re trying to find some connection to Joe Biden. But there is no connection based on the facts and the evidence.’” [The Guardian, 8/6/23]

Insider NJ: Congressional Integrity Project Launches Ads in 18 Republican Districts Highlighting MAGA House Republicans’ Bogus Investigations. “As Republicans return home this month for their August recess, Congressional Integrity Project is launching a new paid digital ad campaign in eighteen Republican districts across the country. The ad campaign is a kickoff to a larger campaign that calls out the Representatives for allowing the House Leadership’s bogus agenda of political stunts to continue while ignoring the most important issues to the American people, all to defend their disgraced former president and harm President Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election.” [Insider NJ, 8/7/23]

Washington Examiner: Democrats launch attack ads targeting House GOP investigations. “The Congressional Integrity Project launched a new ad campaign on Monday targeting vulnerable House Republicans in 18 districts, hammering the lawmakers over their support of investigations into President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden over the last seven months. The 30-second ads call out GOP members by name and encourage voters to call their representatives to tell them ‘to stop pushing an extreme agenda.’” [Washington Examiner, 8/7/23]

CNN: House GOP eyes fall push for Biden impeachment inquiry. “But to move ahead with a formal probe, they’ll have to convince Republicans like Rep. Don Bacon, who hails from a Nebraska district Biden carried in 2020 and will be targeted again by Democrats in 2024. Indeed, already a liberal group, the Congressional Integrity Project, launched on Monday a paid digital ad campaign targeting the 18 Republicans who hail from Biden districts over the GOP investigations, and Democrats expect similar efforts to take shape in the months ahead.” [CNN, 8/8/23]

HuffPost: House Republicans Lurch Toward Impeachment Inquiry Against Joe Biden. “That small margin for error is what the Congressional Integrity Project, a 501(c)4 political group formed to defend Biden from GOP investigations, is hoping to exploit. The group announced Monday that it’s launching a digital ad campaign calling out the 18 Republicans in their districts for failing to stand up to ‘bogus impeachment stunts.’” [HuffPost, 8/8/23]

Daily Beast: James Comer Has a New, Unlikely Story for Missed Deposition. “The Congressional Integrity Project, an outside Democratic group that is running interference for the GOP probes, took to calling Comer ‘No-Show Jamie’ and argued he ‘cannot be trusted to lead any serious endeavor.’” [Daily Beast, 8/9/23]

Washington Examiner: Democrats claim Hunter Biden bank memo an ’embarrassing attempt’ to distract from Trump. “This message was also echoed by the Democrat-aligned Congressional Integrity Project, which was created in November 2022 as a rapid response war room to combat GOP investigations into Joe Biden. ‘This stunt from Comer is just more of the same — no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden, no new information to tie him to Hunter Biden’s business, and another desperate attempt to keep this bogus investigation alive,’ Kyle Herrig, the groups executive director, said in a statement. ‘Comer’s fishing expedition continues to reel in nothing in a desperate attempt to distract from Trump.’” [Washington Examiner, 8/9/23]

USA Today: House Republicans issue new report on Joe Biden corruption… that again offers no evidence. “‘This stunt from Comer is just more of the same – no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden, no new information to tie him to Hunter Biden’s business, and another desperate attempt to keep this bogus investigation alive’ said Kyle Herrig, executive director of the Congressional Integrity Project. ‘Comer’s fishing expedition continues to reel in nothing in a desperate attempt to distract from Trump.’” [USA Today, 8/9/23]

The Messenger: Watchdog Ethics Complaint Says Powerful House GOP Chairman Lied About Phoning into Hunter Biden Associate Interview. “Democratic watchdog group has filed an ethics complaint against Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., for falsely claiming on Fox News that he phoned into an interview of Hunter Biden’s former business associate last month. The Congressional Integrity Project alleges that Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, ‘violated his ethical obligations’ by telling Fox News he was ‘on the phone’ during Biden associate Devon Archer’s high-profile interview with the committee. The ethics complaint was first obtained by The Messenger.” [The Messenger, 8/10/23]

Washington Examiner: Comer received updates by phone from staff during Devon Archer’s testimony, GOP aide says. “On Thursday, the Congressional Integrity Project, a Democratic group tasked with pushing back on House Republicans’ investigations into the Biden family, filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics, asking it to investigate Comer’s claim that he was ‘on the phone,’ saying it was ‘made in blatant disregard’ of the House rules. ‘In making these statements, Representative Comer has violated the public trust and distorted the truth in violation of the House Rules and U.S. House Committee on Ethics guidance,’ Kyle Herrig, the executive director of the group, said in the letter. ‘Accordingly, I urge the OCE to immediately commence an investigation into Representative Comer’s actions.’” [Washington Examiner, 8/10/23]
