Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Government, Donald Sherman, executive vice president and chief counsel of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Will Jordan, vice president of research at Global Strategy Group, and Leslie Dach, senior advisor to the Congressional Integrity Project, joined a press call hosted by the Congressional Integrity Project to discuss the past six months of partisan investigations from Republicans in Congress and release new polling showing Americans agree Congress should be focusing on addressing real issues, not political stunts.
When Republicans took over the House in January 2023, they promised the American people real investigations and real oversight. Instead, Jim Jordan, James Comer, Kevin McCarthy, and their MAGA colleagues are focused on partisan political stunts designed to hurt President Biden and increase their own power. Six months later, these investigations have failed to produce any evidence – not a single shred – of wrongdoing by the President.
Congressional Integrity Project’s new report, Six Months of Stunts, Wrong Priorities, and Failure: MAGA Republicans Have Nothing to Show for Their Partisan Games, details exactly how MAGA Republicans have failed, by any conceivable measure, in their ongoing sham investigations into President Biden.
“I continue to be deeply concerned about the use of the committee and the subcommittee, as a place to settle scores, showcase conspiracy theories, and advance some extreme agenda that risks undermining Americans’ faith in our democracy,” said Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Government. “The multiple conspiracy theories underpinning much of the content of MAGA politicians’ allegations have been debunked with facts time and time again – but Republicans don’t want to be bothered with this inconvenient truth.”
“Congressional oversight is supposed to follow the facts and the law in order to identify waste, fraud, and abuse in government and identify solutions that help the American people,” said Donald Sherman, executive vice president and chief counsel of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). “Instead, many House committee chairs have launched investigations designed to support their partisan political narrative that are devoid of facts or policy proposals that help anyone other than politically aligned pundits.”
“By a more than 3-to-1 margin voters want to see Republicans in Congress focused on addressing issues like the economy and inflation instead of trying to investigate the Biden Administration,” said Will Jordan, vice president of research at Global Strategy Group. “Despite GOP efforts over 6 months, a clear plurality sees these investigations as a political stunt and most voters think it is really about damaging the President, not pursuing the truth.”
“MAGA Republicans care more about damaging the President than they care about the truth and they have no credibility pursuing investigations, having spent four years turning a blind eye to the blatant corruption in Donald Trump’s White House, including the enrichment of Jared and Ivanka,” said Leslie Dach, senior advisor to the Congressional Integrity Project. “They have shown a blatant disregard for the rule of law and for law enforcement. They are willing to destroy the institutions that make America America for their short-term political gain – and on the orders of Donald Trump.”
