Washington, D.C. — As President Trump touched down in Beijing this week for a state visit, his son Eric was right by his side, not as a member of the administration, but as the man who runs the Trump family business. At the same time, a company with direct ties to the Trump family, Alt5 Sigma, on whose board Eric serves as an “observer,” has signed a deal with a Chinese chipmaker. The company’s board is chaired by Zach Witkoff, son of Trump’s own Middle East envoy, and connected to World Liberty Financial, a crypto scheme that has already funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to the Trump family. The conflict could not be more obvious: the president’s son and chief business officer is flying to China while businesses tied to the family are actively chasing Chinese deals in the background.
Nobody should let James Comer off the hook for his silence. The House Oversight Committee chairman made Hunter Biden traveling with his father the centerpiece of a years-long impeachment circus. He called it influence peddling. He demanded subpoenas, held press conferences, and went on Fox News to intone gravely about corruption. Now Eric Trump is in Beijing, courtesy of Air Force One, while family-connected deals simmer with Chinese firms, and Comer has nothing to say.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project Senior Advisor Kyle Herrig released the following statement:
“James Comer spent years manufacturing outrage about Hunter Biden riding on Air Force Two. He held press conferences, issued subpoenas, and went on Fox News to lecture America about ‘corruption.’ Now Eric Trump — who literally runs the Trump Organization — traveled on Air Force One to Beijing, while a company he’s tied to actively pursues Chinese business deals in real time. The Trump family has already pocketed billions of dollars off this presidency. But Comer is nowhere to be found. He’s a fraud and a hypocrite who never cared about oversight and only cares about doing Donald Trump’s bidding.”
