Three Questions For New House Homeland Security Chairman Garbarino About His Colleagues’ Baseless Investigations Into Civil Society

Jul 31, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As Representative Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) takes on his new role as Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, he faces a choice: join his colleagues in their attacks on civil society or stand up for the very organizations that provide critical services to millions of Americans.

Representative Garbarino owes his constituents clear answers about whether he supports his colleagues’ attacks against nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and civil society groups that provide essential services to families across his district and beyond. These organizations help feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and support vulnerable members of our communities, yet his Republican colleagues have made them targets of politically motivated investigations.

As Chairman Garbarino takes the helm of the House Homeland Security Committee, he must choose: continue the dangerous precedent of weaponizing congressional oversight to target perceived political opponents or restore integrity to the committee’s work by focusing on actual threats to our nation’s security. Before launching any new investigations, Chairman Garbarino must answer to his constituents about his priorities: Will he end the frivolous investigations targeting the very organizations that help people in his district, or will he instead focus on legitimate security threats?

Here are three more questions for the new chairman about his colleagues’ investigations into civil society:

  1. Will you speak out against your colleagues’ baseless harassment of nonprofits that serve America’s most vulnerable and focus your committee’s resources on legitimate homeland security threats, or are you going to be just another Trump enabler who weaponizes congressional power to target the very organizations that provide critical support?
  2. Why are your colleagues investigating Democratic fundraising platforms like ActBlue while ignoring massive campaign finance violations by Republican platform WinRed, which facilitated thousands in illegal foreign donations and the extremist groups like Project 2025 driving your party’s attacks on civil society?
  3. Why is your party manufacturing distractions instead of addressing the real challenges facing American families? Congressional Republicans have already avoided their constituents by rolling back town halls, sent the House home early to dodge the Epstein scandal, and are now relying on classic misdirection to deflect from Trump’s failed agenda.
