THIS WEEK: While Pushing Medicaid Cuts and Tax Breaks for the Rich, Congressional Republicans Focus on Defending Trump’s Imperial Presidency in Bogus Hearings

Feb 27, 2025

Amid House Republicans’ efforts to pass a budget resolution that slashes over $800 billion in Medicaid and other critical federal programs relied upon by millions, all to fund tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, these lawmakers have spent the majority of their time on sham hearings aimed at defending Trump’s imperial presidency and the blatant weaponization of government.

Make no mistake: Republicans in Congress are ceding power to the executive branch in an effort to bow to President Trump and Elon Musk instead of doing their constitutional duty to protect institutions that form the backbone of American society.

Here are the lowlights from this week’s committee schedule:

HEARINGS

  • A Joint House and Senate Hearing With Veterans Service Organization, Republicans Ignored Veterans’ Pleas To Stop DOGE and Elon Musk From Cutting Spending. During the hearing, the head of AMVETS criticized Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency: “We are deeply concerned by recent actions taken by the Department of Government Efficiency.”
  • In A House Judiciary Hearing On Federal Courts, Republicans Pushed For More Trump-Appointed Judges. During a hearing entitled “Justice Delayed: The Crisis of Undermanned Federal Courts,” House Republicans argued that the federal judiciary faces a “significant and lasting shortage of judges,” and spent the hearing pushing for the appointment of more judges by the Trump administration.
  • House Judiciary Republicans Held Yet Another Weaponization Hearing Featuring Right-Wing Witnesses Defending Trump. On Tuesday, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing entitled “Entering the Golden Age: Ending the Weaponization of the Justice Department.” During the hearing, Trump’s former ICE director testified alongside a former elected Republican.
  • House Judiciary Republicans Pushed To Codify Trump’s Unconstitutional Efforts To End Birthright Citizenship. On Tuesday, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing entitled “Subject to the Jurisdiction Thereof’: Birthright Citizenship and the Fourteenth Amendment.” During the hearing, one of the witnesses argued that birthright citizenship was merely, “ folk mythology, a misreading of the relevant Supreme Court opinions, and a profound misunderstanding of U.S. immigration history.” Another made clear, “not all persons born in the United States are constitutionally entitled to the precious privilege of American citizenship.”
  • During A House Oversight Hearing On The GAO, House Republicans Silenced Dissent. During the House Oversight Hearing entitled, “The Government Accountability Office’s 2025 High Risk List,” Chair James Comer (R-KY) threatened to have the House Sergeant of Arms forcibly remove a member of the committee and barred him from speaking after he criticized President Trump, calling him a grifter. During the same hearing, Marjorie Taylor Greene declared that federal government jobs are not “real” jobs: “Greene: Those are not real jobs producing federal revenue. Federal employees do not deserve their jobs. Federal employees do not deserve their paycheck.”
  • House Republicans Held A Hearing Promoting DOGE and Elon Musk’s Efforts To Target USAID. Earlier today, House Republicans on the select DOGE subcommittee held a hearing criticizing the volume of foreign aid, boosting DOGE and Elon Musk’s efforts to target USAID. During the hearing, a Democratic committee member raised concerns about authoritarian behavior, stating “250 years ago, the people of this great nation rejected a reckless abusive king and we won’t go back.” Chair Marjorie Taylor Greene replied, “Threats will not be tolerated by anyone.”’ Republicans even invited a former USAID official working for the right-wing Heritage Foundation fellow to harp on his former agency.
