Washington, D.C. – Last night, reporting from inside the GOP’s House Speaker battle showed both top candidates for Speaker of the House, Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, refused to say that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election – standing by Trump’s Big Lie which undermined our democracy and led to a deadly assault on the Capitol.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project senior advisor and former Defend Democracy Project co-chair, Leslie Dach, issued the following statement:
“The litmus test for Speaker of the House is all related to bowing down to Donald Trump – standing by his lie that the 2020 election was stolen leading to the most violent assault on the Capitol, and standing by Trump’s push for an evidence-free impeachment of President Biden. No matter who emerges as Speaker, they are MAGA through and through and have proven to be willing to debase our institutions and undermine democracy in service of Donald Trump.”
