Washington, D.C. — Today, new reporting revealed that the Justice Department is actively investigating Iran’s use of the crypto trading platform Binance to evade U.S. sanctions. Among other things, the violations include more than $1 billion being funneled to Iran-backed terror groups around the world. This comes less than a month after recently pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao was welcomed to the Trump family’s crypto conference at Mar-a-Lago, where he mingled with administration officials and the President’s sons.
In response, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:
“Why was a crypto executive whose company is under active DOJ investigation for sanctions violations invited to the President’s private club? If Republicans in Congress were actually serious about investigating corruption, they would be demanding answers about why someone whose company is linked to a terrorism financing investigation was invited to hobnob with the President’s family and staff.”
“Instead of conducting legitimate oversight over blatant corruption like this, Congressional Republicans are launching sham investigations into nonprofits based on conspiracy theories while ignoring actual corruption involving sanctions evasion and terror financing. This shameful double standard proves they care more about partisan witch hunts than protecting national security or holding the powerful to account. The American people deserve answers, not political theater that ignores corruption when it involves Trump and his allies.”
