Will Chairman Comer Investigate Trump’s Assault on the Fed’s Independence or Continue Providing Cover?
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In yet another authoritarian power grab, Donald Trump attempted to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook—a brazen assault on central bank independence and the rule of law. This unprecedented move escalates Trump’s ongoing campaign to weaponize federal institutions against his perceived enemies. By targeting Cook, Trump is directly undermining the Federal Reserve’s independence, which exists precisely to protect monetary policy from presidential interference.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer’s constitutional duty is to investigate executive branch overreach. Yet he has remained conspicuously silent while Trump shreds the safeguards that protect our democracy. If Republicans truly believe in limited government and checks on executive power, they must investigate this lawless abuse. Otherwise, Comer’s silence will be remembered as complicity in enabling authoritarian power grabs.
In response to Trump’s attack on Federal Reserve independence, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:
“Trump’s attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is a direct assault on the economic institutions that shield Americans from political chaos and presidential vendettas. By targeting Cook, Trump is not only undermining the Fed’s independence—he is daring Congress to look the other way as he weaponizes federal power against anyone who refuses to bend to his authoritarian will.
“Chairman Comer now faces a choice: investigate this unprecedented attack on the Fed’s independence, or continue enabling Trump’s destruction of constitutional norms. Instead, Republicans look the other way—launching sham investigations into nonprofits and targeting Trump’s political opponents—while ignoring real abuses of power. If Congress fails to act, Republicans will be remembered as complicit in Trump’s effort to weaponize every federal institution against anyone who dares uphold their constitutional duties.”
