Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Homeland Security Committee held its first hearing on the fact-free, sham impeachment of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This hearing is not only a political stunt, but pre-planned and pre-determined, since Homeland Security Committee chair, Mark Green, promised donors he would impeach the secretary back in April 2023. Despite a year’s worth of investigations, the committee has not been able to turn up a single shred of evidence worthy of impeaching the Secretary. Today’s hearing was more of the same.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“Today’s impeachment hearing was embarrassing and shameful. MAGA House Republicans still cannot cite a single impeachable offense committed by Secretary Mayorkas. On the verge of a MAGA-fueled government shutdown, MAGA House Republicans continue to prove they have the wrong priorities. They are focused on political stunts all to undermine our democracy and help Donald Trump, an autocrat, return to the White House in 2024. And they are doing all this while ignoring the important priorities of the American people. The same people leading this sham impeachment hearing, are the same ones at Donald Trump’s right hand and who led the 2020 effort to overturn an election Trump and his allies knew he lost.”
