STATEMENT: Republicans’ War on Civil Society Puts Lifesaving Disaster Relief at Risk

Aug 28, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As hurricane season intensifies, Republicans’ war on nonprofits is showing its real-life consequences. Reporting this week illustrates that Trump’s DHS is barring aid groups—including the Salvation Army and the Red Cross—from providing food, housing, and other critical resources in the aftermath of disasters. This bureaucratic weaponization of emergency aid threatens to leave vulnerable communities without lifesaving assistance precisely when they need it most, turning natural disasters into opportunities for political cruelty.

In response, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:

“The consequences of Republicans’ war on civil society are devastating for communities with nowhere to turn when disaster strikes. By imposing discriminatory bureaucratic barriers that block organizations from delivering essential services after disasters, the administration, enabled by Republicans in Congress, is deliberately sabotaging the humanitarian response system that saves lives—regardless of immigration status.

“This dangerous political stunt will throw emergency response efforts into chaos, forcing aid workers to check documentation while people urgently need help. The result will be preventable deaths and needless suffering—all to advance Trump and Congressional Republicans’ harmful agenda to systematically weaken nonprofit organizations that serve vulnerable communities, from sham hearings targeting civil society to bureaucratic obstacles that obstruct lifesaving aid.”
