Washington, D.C. – Today, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he had granted Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss’s request for special counsel status in the Hunter Biden probe. The decision comes after Republicans implied the Department of Justice was limiting Weiss’s authority over the case. However, after the announcement, Republicans wasted no time calling Weiss’s integrity into question, despite the fact that Trump himself appointed Weiss, saying the Delaware prosecutor “shared his vision,” and Congressional Republicans, including James Comer, supported Weiss’ nomination in 2017. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director Kyle Herrig issued the following statement:

“House Republicans’ opposition to Trump appointee David Weiss’s appointment as special counsel is nothing more than another political stunt. After months of calling for this, their dismay makes clear that they will stop at nothing to weaponize Congress to interfere with an ongoing investigation and harm Joe Biden.”
