Washington, D.C. — After convicted felon and President-elect Donald Trump announced he would nominate January 6th co-conspirator and scandal ridden Florida man Matt Gaetz to serve as our nation’s highest ranking law enforcement official, Gaetz abruptly resigned from Congress, effectively ending an investigation into the congressman by the House Committee on Ethics just days before the committee was due to release a report with troubling accusations that the now-former Congressman had sex with a 17 year old high schooler. When asked if the report should still be released, Trump crony Speaker Mike Johnson said he wanted the House Ethics panel to keep the findings secret.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“Mike Johnson has spent his entire term as House Speaker doing Trump’s bidding. Now, he’s stooping to doing the bidding of Matt Gaetz – a man James Bond henchman casting directors would say was ‘too on the nose.’
“This is a new low for Mike Johnson, who supports intentionally withholding information from his colleagues in the Senate and the American people on whether or not Matt Gaetz deserves to be Attorney General. Gaetz should obviously be disqualified for numerous reasons, and the fact that Johnson refuses to see that and is trying to protect him is disgraceful.”
