Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the withdrawal from Afghanistan, but rather than conducting a serious inquiry into the tragic deaths of 13 servicemembers, Chairman McCaul used the hearing and the testimony of brave veterans to try to score political points against President Biden while shielding Donald Trump from scrutiny. In response, Congressional Integrity Project Senior Adviser Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:

“In a callous political stunt, Michael McCaul and his fellow MAGA Republicans attempted to use this tragedy to score points against President Biden and his administration while completely refusing to account for Donald Trump’s actions that led us here. Many Republicans praised Donald Trump when he announced his plan to withdraw from Afghanistan, but changed their tune when it was clear President Biden would be the one to finally end the 20-year forever war. It was Trump’s deal with the Taliban to release 5,000 of their prisoners that bolstered the Taliban and began the plans for withdrawing from Afghanistan. It is disgusting that McCaul thinks so little of our troops and veterans that he is willing to use them as political pawns.”
