Washington, D.C. – Today, as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced a plan to organize field trips for her fellow MAGA Republicans in Congress to visit January 6th rioters in jail, other House Republicans announced plans to launch investigations into the January 6th Select Committee itself.
“The January 6th attack on our Capitol was disgusting, un-American, and an attack on the very core of our democracy,” said Congressional Integrity Project senior advisor and former co-chair of Defend Democracy Project Brad Woodhouse. “The fact that MAGA Republicans want to give aid and comfort to violent insurrectionists who vandalized the Capitol, defecated and urinated in its hallways, targeted the Speaker of the House and Vice President for execution, and injured 140 police officers is the lowest of lows for a party that has no moral authority to lead.”
“The effort by Kevin McCarthy and MAGA Republicans to whitewash the most violent insurrection since the Civil War – incited as part of a criminal conspiracy by a disgraced former president – shows how fully the Republican party is embracing violence and white nationalism,” said Congressional Integrity Project senior advisor and former co-chair of Defend Democracy Project Leslie Dach. “If they really cared about investigating January 6th, then the five Republicans who were subpoenaed by the January 6th Committee would come forward and share the information they know. How can these investigations be seen as credible when the people leading the investigations are the ones who sought pardons and hid from subpoenas during the real, nonpartisan Select Committee investigation? This disgusting charade is an attack on law enforcement, our country and our democracy – and nothing more than political payback on behalf of Donald Trump.”
