Washington, D.C. – This morning, Punchbowl reported that Speaker Kevin McCarthy will endorse an impeachment inquiry into President Biden this week – despite having no evidence of any wrongdoing whatsoever. Additionally, recent battleground polling in the 18 House districts held by a Republican but won by President Biden in 2020 shows that a majority of voters in those districts think that an impeachment would be a partisan stunt, including a majority of independents.

In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig said the following:

“Kevin McCarthy owes his speakership to Donald Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and MAGA and he’s willing to sacrifice the House majority to do their bidding. Let’s be clear: this impeachment gambit isn’t about gathering more evidence, it’s about damaging President Biden and helping Trump. Republicans have been using Congress’ investigative powers for the last eight months – reviewing 12,000 pages of subpoenaed bank records, over 2,000 pages of suspicious activity reports, and spending hours interviewing witnesses – and have found no evidence of wrongdoing. This is about the election and putting their disgraced, loser, insurrectionist, four times-indicted ex-president back in power at all costs – ignoring the facts.

“And to those Republicans in swing districts who ran on pocketbook issues – saying this is just an ‘inquiry’ won’t protect you from the wrath of voters who oppose this bogus political stunt. Supporting an inquiry with no evidence is the exact same thing as supporting an impeachment. Period.”
