Washington, D.C. – Today, Oversight Committee Republicans announced their witnesses for the first impeachment hearing since Speaker McCarthy opened the inquiry without a vote earlier this month. And who did Comer hand-select as witnesses for this first, highly anticipated blockbuster hearing? A Fox News contributor (Jonathan Turley), a Fox News pundit (Bruce Dubinsky), and a member of the Trump transition team (Eileen O’Connor). No, that’s not a bad joke. It’s the sad reality of what passes for governance in the Oversight Committee.
What won’t be present at the hearing? Any witnesses who deal in facts and any shred of evidence whatsoever that President Biden committed any wrongdoing. This total embarrassment of a hearing was thrown together in order to distract from the looming government shutdown entirely of the Republicans’ own making, showing they’d rather focus on these partisan, political stunts at the behest of Trump rather than solving the real issues keeping working families up at night.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“The first impeachment inquiry hearing is a bad joke at the expense of the American people. The hearing amounts to nothing more than a meeting of Trump loyalists in a green room at Fox News. Two Fox News personalities and a member of the Trump transition team are the only witnesses. Comer invited not a single fact witness and has yet to provide a shred of evidence of any wrongdoing by President Biden. Quite simply their case against the president is as weak as the witnesses they have invited. James Comer and the MAGA Republican House should be ashamed that they are pursuing this farce while ignoring the critical priorities Americans care about and while their chaos lurches us toward a devastating government shutdown. But this crowd knows no shame.”
