Washington D.C. –  Yesterday, Talking Points Memo released a tranche of texts which showed South Carolina U.S. Representative and Oversight Committee member Ralph Norman texting Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows and urging him to tell the former president to declare martial law. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director Kyle Herrig said the following:

“The Congressional Integrity Project calls on James Comer and House Republicans to immediately strip Ralph Norman of his assignment on the House Oversight Committee. Anyone who proposes a coup and was working with others in order to overturn an election has no right to work on a committee as powerful as the Oversight Committee. How can we trust the incoming Committee with conducting fair, legitimate investigations when one of its members is someone who was doing his best to stop the peaceful transfer of power to the incoming administration? How can Ralph Norman be allowed to investigate Joe Biden and his administration when he called for throwing out the constitution to prevent President Biden from assuming an office he legitimately won?

“Ralph Norman’s presence on the Oversight Committee completely disqualifies any investigation as politically motivated and hyperpartisan. If James Comer and House Republicans have any sense of fairness and decency, Norman will be kicked off the Committee immediately.”
