Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Administration and Oversight committees held a joint hearing targeting the District of Columbia’s election administration. Instead of seeking the testimony of voting rights experts, the MAGA Republicans on the committees exploited Congress by conducting another sham hearing in an attempt to blatantly undermine Americans’ trust in democracy and the systems that give every citizen the freedom to have their vote counted. The hearing provided blatant election deniers and conspiracy theorists like Ken Cuccinelli and Charles Spies platforms to spread discredited information on mail-in ballots and criticize essential voting rights reforms. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“MAGA Republicans just won’t give up their pursuit to strip voting rights from the residents of D.C. instead of addressing the issues that are most important to Americans, like gun violence, healthcare, and more. Rather than pursuing efforts to make it easier for Americans to exercise their right to vote, they want to try to control the outcomes of elections to force their radical MAGA agenda, just like they tried to do when attempting to overthrow the 2020 presidential election.”
