Washington, D.C. – Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee and their extreme witnesses used today’s immigration hearing to lay out the groundwork for a bogus impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. The timing of this hearing and beginning of impeachment proceedings makes clear that this is a political payment to appease MAGA Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene over the bipartisan debt ceiling bill. Despite Republican fear mongering, border crossings have gone down after Title 42 expired and the chaos they claimed would happen did not but that is not stopping them. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:

“Not content with just making a mockery of themselves, House Republicans are now making a mockery of the impeachment process. It is not meant to be used by Kevin McCarthy and Republican leadership as the ‘dessert’ to go along with a ‘shit sandwich’ of a debt ceiling deal as Marjorie Taylor Greene so eloquently put it. There are real-world consequences of partisan stunts like this bogus impeachment including the ongoing demonization of migrants by MAGA Republicans that lead to more heated rhetoric around the issue. If House Republicans were actually concerned about our immigration system, they would be working towards bipartisan legislation and not taking Secretary Mayorkas and DHS staff away from the important work they are doing to protect our country.”
