CIP Reminds Kevin McCarthy Who Holds the Real Power in Congress
Washington, DC – On Monday, January 2, 2023 at 6:00 PM ET, Congressional Integrity Project hosted a projection display at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 3rd St NW and put up posters around Capitol Hill reminding Kevin McCarthy and Republicans that Marjorie Taylor Greene and extreme MAGA Republicans like her hold the real power in Congress.
“In order to cling to power, Kevin McCarthy cut deals with extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene, making her and her allies the real power in Washington,” said Congressional Integrity Project executive director Kyle Herrig. “This is just further proof that the Republican party has become totally overrun by MAGA extremists who don’t care about actually solving real problems for America. They only care about gaining power for themselves and hurting President Biden.”

Though he is likely to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy is beholden to extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene for throwing their support behind his speakership. Meanwhile, Greene is banking on the power McCarthy will hand her in return for her support to pursue MAGA Republicans’ extremist agenda, including partisan investigations designed to do nothing more than hurt President Biden politically. Just yesterday Greene said that 2023 would see the impeachment of Joe Biden and previously she extracted a promise from Republican leaders that they would investigate the treatment of violent insurrectionists by the Department of Justice.
