Oversight Committee to haul Mayor Bowser and other local officials before Congress despite violent crime hitting 30-year lows
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, Donald Trump launched an authoritarian takeover of security in our nation’s capital, deploying the National Guard and seizing control of the Metropolitan Police against the explicit wishes of the Mayor and local officials. This move decimated city sovereignty and mirrored the chaotic deployments we saw earlier this year in California.
Now, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has threatened to drag Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chair Phil Mendelson, and Attorney General Brian Schwalb to a hearing on Capitol Hill. Comer’s goal is clear: to prop up Trump’s false claims of rampant violence in DC—when the reality is that violent crime has plummeted to historic lows. Once again, by orchestrating yet another sham hearing, Comer and congressional Republicans prove they are willing to do anything to legitimize Trump’s outrageous lies and distract from his failing agenda.
In response to Comer’s threats for these sham hearings, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:
“Comer is doing what he does best—calling sham hearings to make people forget about Trump and congressional Republicans’ utter failure to do anything to help people and keep them safe. If Comer had an ounce of integrity, he’d stand up to Trump’s authoritarian power grab and demand an end to this gross weaponization of law enforcement. Instead, he’ll be a rubber stamp for Trump, ceding all responsibility for oversight to his favorite wannabe dictator. Americans are watching Congressional Republicans bend over backwards to enact Trump’s disastrous agenda, rip away critical programs and services families rely on, and shield him from accountability—including his refusal to release the Epstein files. This political circus is nothing more than a distraction designed to protect Trump, not the American people.”
