STATEMENT: Comer Pushes Blueprint for Military Occupation of U.S. Cities in Alarming Authoritarian Escalation

Aug 14, 2025

Oversight Chair says Trump’s National Guard deployment should be an “experiment” for “Democrat-run cities” across America

WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is no longer just cheering on Trump’s authoritarian power grabs—he’s trying to turn them into standard practice. Comer is now openly calling for the military to “walk the streets” of American cities, describing Trump’s National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C. as an “experiment” that “should” be replicated in “a lot of the Democrat-run cities in America.”

Comer’s push to normalize the military patrolling U.S. streets is a direct assault on constitutional principles and local sovereignty—an attempt to greenlight federal occupation of cities against the will of local officials. Instead of investigating Trump’s abuse of power or misuse of federal resources, Comer is pledging, “we’re gonna support doing this in other cities,” and comparing the vision to military occupations “in many countries around the world for the past two decades.”

This comes as Trump diverts FBI agents from counterintelligence and public corruption cases to make traffic stops—part of his dangerous show of force—while Comer burns taxpayer dollars on sham hearings, smears against ActBlue, and threats to haul D.C. officials before Congress.

In response to Comer’s dangerous calls to militarize American cities, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:

“James Comer has dropped any facade of legitimate oversight. He’s now advocating for the military to occupy American cities like hostile territory. Calling Trump’s unconstitutional deployment an ‘experiment’ for Democrat-run cities isn’t just reckless—it’s an open invitation to expand authoritarian rule across the country. Comer is enabling Trump’s militarization of America while distracting from his corruption, his policy failures, and his refusal to release the Epstein files. Every elected leader who still believes in the Constitution should be condemning this dangerous escalation and calling for hearings to investigate these actions—loudly and immediately.”
