Washington, D.C. – Today, the Daily Beast broke startling news highlighting James Comer’s history of using investigations to further his own political standing, this time by influencing the launch of a grand jury investigation during his 2015 run for Kentucky governor using leaked emails obtained illegally to intimidate an ex-girlfriend and a blogger publicizing allegations of abuse. In response to the Daily Beast story, Congressional Integrity Project Executive Director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“James Comer has no credibility to investigate anyone when he is guilty of weaponizing investigations for his own political gain. Comer’s campaign initiated and leaked a grand jury investigation in order to further his career and to intimidate his ex-girlfriend and a blogger who was publicizing her allegations of abuse against him. James Comer should be in a courtroom answering for his conduct not in a hearing room judging the conduct of others.”
In response to Comer’s admission in a New York Times story that he was involved in potentially illegal activity in his 2015 gubernatorial race, the Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to the Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office calling for them to investigate Comer’s involvement in obtaining and distributing leaked emails and, if there is sufficient evidence, take criminal action against him.
