WASHINGTON, D.C. — The New York Times revealed in new reporting today that the Trump Justice Department relied on Capital Research Center (CRC) research to justify an unprecedented investigation into the Open Society Foundation. CRC, which markets itself as an “investigative think tank,” has long misled the public by operating as a partisan political advocacy group — spreading false narratives, fueling conspiracy theories, and running smear campaigns to advance Republican interests and support Trump’s political agenda. Now, after its work was cited in the DOJ report, CRC pretends to be shocked at being implicated in the very corruption it actively enabled.
In response, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:
“The Capital Research Center’s attempt to distance itself from the Trump White House’s abuse of power is laughable. CRC has deliberately misled the public for years — pushing false narratives, manufacturing outrage, and laundering political attacks through its so-called research to serve conservative and Republican political interests.
“Their fingerprints are all over this investigation. CRC wrote the script that Trump’s Justice Department followed, then stood back and watched as their so-called ‘research’ was weaponized to serve Trump’s political interests.
“CRC isn’t an independent watchdog. It’s a partisan political weapon — one that has helped Trump and his allies wage war on independent institutions, civil society, and the rule of law. Their sudden outrage is nothing more than an act of self-preservation from a group that has finally been exposed for what it truly is.”
