Washington, D.C. — The Trump-Musk administration’s “Department of Government Efficiency” has triggered widespread outrage with their ruthless mass firings of Americans working in critical sectors like aviation safety, nuclear weapons security, and disease prevention. These drastic moves are part of an extreme, deeply unpopular agenda that slashes programs like Medicaid, which millions of Americans depend on, to pay for more tax breaks for the rich.
After only one month in office, the American people – Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike – have had enough. Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s approval ratings are underwater, and everyday Americans hurt by this administration are making their voices heard at town halls across the country. Amid the backlash, Rep. Richard Hudson, chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, has directed House Republicans to not hold any more in-person town halls with their constituents.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project Senior Advisor Kyle Herrig has issued the following statement:
“It is shameful, yet unsurprising that congressional Republicans are running away from their constituents with their tails between their legs. They now face the unenviable task of justifying their inaction against Trump and his handpicked, unelected, unaccountable oligarch abruptly firing hardworking Americans from jobs they’ve held for years doing work the American people rely on.
“Instead of ruining the lives of their constituents, and gutting vital programs – like health care, education, and environment protections – to pay for another massive tax handout to people like Donald Trump, maybe this administration and its cartoon villain of a mascot, and enablers in Congress, should focus on actually helping the millions of hardworking Americans living paycheck to paycheck. But don’t get your hopes up.”
