Washington, D.C. – This morning, the Guardian reported that Alexander Smirnov, the MAGA House Republicans’ so-called bombshell witness who was recently arrested for lying to the FBI after being fed stories by Russian intelligence agents, was paid over half a billion dollars by “Trump business associates” before making the allegations which led directly to the ongoing impeachment attempt of President Biden.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“You truly cannot make this up. Alexander Smirnov is a criminal liar. Smirnov was fed these lies by Russian assets. Smirnov was paid by Trump business associates. And … Smirnov is James Comer’s star witness and his testimony spurred Comer’s impeachment investigation into President Biden.
Let’s be clear: Smirnov has zero credibility. The only Congressional investigation he should be near is one into his own activities. It is far, far past time for this impeachment inquiry to be over and for the real conflicts of interests to be investigated.”
