ROUNDUP: Polling Shows Majority of Voters in the Key GOP Battleground House Districts Oppose MAGA Impeachment Plans

Sep 7, 2023

As Kevin McCarthy prepares to do more of Donald Trump’s bidding by launching a bogus impeachment against President Joe Biden, voters around the country are worried about healthcare costs, the economy, and education.  An impeachment inquiry into President Biden is far from the top priority of everyday Americans, and according to recent polling by Public Policy Polling, voters in the 18 House districts held by Republicans but won by President Biden in 2020 think a potential impeachment inquiry into President Biden would be more about helping Donald Trump than finding the truth. The poll also shows that over half of these voters believe impeachment would be more of a partisan political stunt, including 55% of independent voters. Clearly, Kevin McCarthy, James Comer, Jim Jordan, and their MAGA allies have the wrong priorities and have no trouble throwing the American people under the bus.

La Opinión: Majority Of Voters In Key Districts In 2024 Call The Republican Plan To Impeach Biden A “Political Stunt.” “The ‘impeachment’ plan for President Joe Biden of the Republicans led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy (California), is rejected by 67% of voters in 18 key districts for the 2024 elections. […] The poll establishes that 55% of those surveyed believe that an impeachment investigation is aimed at helping former President Donald Trump, rather than finding the truth about Biden. 56% of independent voters believe the same, while 41% think the plan would be to find the truth. NBC News: Democratic Group Writes A Poll-Tested Playbook To Fight Impeachment In Biden Districts. “The results showed two-thirds of respondents in those key GOP-held battleground districts said Republicans shouldn’t impeach Biden without ‘evidence’ that he ‘received any bribes or changed government policies in relation to the activities of his son, Hunter Biden.’ That includes an even greater share of independents, the firm said. Meanwhile, only one quarter of respondents said they should proceed either way. When given two options, more than half of those surveyed said impeachment would be more of a ‘political stunt,‘ while just over four in 10 said it was a ‘serious effort to investigate important problems.‘ Majorities of respondents also said it was more about ‘damaging President Biden politically‘ than ‘finding the truth,’ when presented with those two options.” [NBC News, 9/6/23]

Daily Freeman (Opinion): Bill Press: Impeach Joe Biden! But For What, Exactly? “Efforts to impeach Joe Biden will fail, not only because of lack of evidence, but because they could backfire on Republicans and cost them control of the House in 2024. A poll by the Congressional Integrity Project this week shows that 56% of Americans already think trying to impeach Biden is a ‘political stunt.’” [Daily Freeman, 9/4/23]

The Hill: White House Warns GOP Biden Impeachment Will Backfire. “When it comes to how seriously voters are taking the threat by Republicans, it appears the White House also has public opinion on their side, for now. Fifty-six percent of Americans think an impeachment inquiry into Biden would be more of a partisan political stunt, according to a new poll from Public Policy Polling, a left-leaning group. Also, 51 percent of those polled said they think an impeachment inquiry would be more about damaging Biden politically, while only 45 think it would be about finding the truth.” [The Hill, 8/31/23]

Washington Examiner: Majority Of Voters Skeptical Of Biden Impeachment Inquiry: Poll. “Fifty-six percent of voters say an impeachment inquiry would be more politically motivated, compared to just 38% who say it would be ‘more of a serious effort to investigate important problems,’ according to a recent poll by the left-leaning Congressional Integrity Project and Public Policy Polling. Most independent voters, or 53%, say the move would amount to a partisan stunt, possibly harming Republicans with a crucial voter bloc… ‘MAGA Republicans’ impeachment promises are nothing more than a partisan political stunt designed to hurt President Biden, and the American people know it,’ said Congressional Integrity Project senior adviser Leslie Dach in a statement. ‘Republicans have failed to find a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden and voters see right through their partisan games.’” [Washington Examiner, 8/30/23

Truthout: Marjorie Taylor Greene Vows to Oppose Fed Funding Bill Unless Biden Is Impeached. “According to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted August 23-24, 56 percent of Americans believe that an impeachment inquiry into Biden would be ‘a political stunt,’ while only 38 percent believe that it would be ‘a serious effort to investigate important problems.’ The poll also found that 61 percent of Americans don’t want Biden to be impeached without evidence that he received bribes or enacted government policies due to his son’s business dealings. ‘MAGA Republicans’ impeachment promises are nothing more than a partisan political stunt designed to hurt President Biden, and the American people know it,’ Leslie Dach, a senior adviser with the Congressional Integrity Project, which commissioned the poll, said in a statement.” [Truthout, 9/1/23]

The Hill: Impeachment Inquiry, Funding Could Spell Trouble For House GOP Moderates. “Republicans in competitive districts are poised to come face-to-face with two politically perilous matters this month: whether to open an impeachment inquiry into President Biden and the possibility of a government shutdown. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has suggested that the House could hold a vote to launch an impeachment inquiry as soon as this month, despite hesitation from some moderates. At the same time, conservatives are continuing their push for steeper spending cuts and policy provisions attached to government funding, with some going as far as to embrace the possibility of a shutdown. Both issues could put the 18 Republicans defending their seats in districts Biden won last cycle in a tight spot — forcing them to choose between risking blowback from their party on Capitol Hill or from their voters back home. […] But a new survey says public opinion in Biden-won districts may be trending in Lawler and Bacon’s favor. In a poll commissioned by the Democratic-aligned Congressional Integrity Project released Wednesday, 56 percent of voters in the 18 Biden-won districts said an impeachment inquiry would be more of a partisan political stunt, while 41 percent said it would be a serious effort to probe important problems. Fifty-five percent of the respondents said an inquiry would be more about helping former President Trump rather than uncovering the truth.” [The Hill, 9/7/23]

New York Times: Biden Team Isn’t Waiting for Impeachment to Go on the Offensive. “A group called the Congressional Integrity Project has been collecting polling data; blitzing out statements, fact sheets and memos; and producing ads targeting 18 House Republicans representing districts that voted for Mr. Biden in 2020. ‘As the Republicans ramp up their impeachment efforts, they’re certainly making this a political exercise, and we’re responding in kind,’ said Kyle Herrig, the executive director of the Congressional Integrity Project. ‘This is a moment of offense for Democrats. They have no basis for impeachment. They have no evidence. They have nothing.’ […] Republicans have not identified any specific impeachable offenses, and some have privately made clear that they do not see any at the moment. ’” [New York Times, 9/3/23]

The Hill: Americans Split Along Party Lines On Impeachment: Survey. “Americans’ views about a potential impeachment inquiry into President Biden are split along party lines, according to a poll published Wednesday. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling and commissioned by the Congressional Integrity Project, both of which have Democratic leanings, found 56 percent of registered voters think a GOP impeachment inquiry into Biden would be a ‘partisan political stunt,’ including 20 percent of Trump voters and 88 percent of Biden voters. When grouped by party affiliation, 30 percent of Republicans and 81 percent of Democrats held this view. Thirty-eight percent of all respondents said they think it would be a ‘serious effort to investigate important problems,’ including 73 percent of Trump voters and 7 percent of Biden voters. When grouped by party, 67 percent of Republicans and 13 percent of Democrats held this view.” [The Hill, 8/30/23]

Semafor: Impeachment Skepticism. “Americans are split along partisan lines about whether a House impeachment inquiry into Biden would be partisan. According to a Public Policy Polling survey shared exclusively with Semafor and commissioned by the left-leaning Congressional Integrity Project, 51% of voters say an impeachment investigation would be more about trying to damage the president politically, versus 45% who say it would be to get to the truth about the various allegations surrounding Hunter Biden. The poll found low favorable ratings for Republicans conducting the investigation, however, with only 21% approving of Congressman Jim Comer’s performance and 41% disapproving. President Biden’s approval came in at 44%, slightly higher than his average in recent polls.” [Semafor Principals Newsletter, 8/30/23]

Pod Save America: EP774 “Are Republicans About To Impeach Biden?”: “A poll came out […] that 56% of people think that impeachment of Joe Biden would be a partisan witch hunt or partisan fishing expedition… A majority of people don’t like it… So, I’m going to use this poll that I mentioned before that was done by the Congressional Integrity Project which is a Democratic group that pushes back on Congressional Investigations, […] this poll showed that 56% of voters, as I said, thought that this basically was stupid partisan bullshit.” [Pod Save America, 8/31/23]
