Ranking Member for the Oversight Committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin, speaks at a CIP press conference with Oversight and Judiciary Committee members ahead of the vote to formalize an impeachment inquiry on Wednesday.
Yesterday, in a shameful display, MAGA House Republicans voted to formally open an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. MAGA House Republicans have chosen to stand with Donald Trump, the disgraced former president facing 91 criminal indictments, instead of with the American people and issues like access to health care and the cost of living. Instead, they are pushing ahead with this desperate political stunt, despite the fact that James Comer and Jim Jordan’s year-long investigation has not produced a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing by the President, let alone any high crime or misdemeanor warranting impeachment. But don’t just take our word for it:
Reuters: Biden Impeachment Inquiry Authorized By House Republicans, Despite Lack Of Evidence. “The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to formally authorize its ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, as Republicans unite behind the effort even though they have yet to find evidence of wrongdoing by the Democrat. […] But they have not provided evidence that Biden took any official actions to help those businesses or benefited financially from them.” [Reuters, 12/13/23]
Associated Press: House Approves Impeachment Inquiry Into President Biden As Republicans Rally Behind Investigation. “The House on Wednesday authorized the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, with every Republican rallying behind the politically charged process despite lingering concerns among some in the party that the investigation has yet to produce evidence of misconduct by the president. […] no evidence has emerged that Biden acted corruptly or accepted bribes in his current role or previous office as vice president.” [Associated Press, 12/14/23]
The Washington Post (Opinion): Here’s How Dishonest James Comer’s Biden Allegations Are. “But here’s James Comer, four months later, suggesting not only that Hunter Biden did receive this money, but that it somehow influenced his father’s policy decisions. Because, at the end of the day, that’s what he and his colleagues want to convey. No evidence about Joe Biden’s unacceptable actions but, instead, that Joe Biden is somehow linked to a seedy universe of criminality — a link and a universe they’re still struggling to manifest.” [The Washington Post (Opinion), 12/14/23]
The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board: No Evidence For Biden Impeachment Inquiry? No Problem. The House GOP Doesn’t Seem To Care. “The politically inspired impeachment inquiry into President Biden has failed to produce any convincing evidence that Biden has committed the “high crimes and misdemeanors” required by the U.S. Constitution for the conviction and removal of a chief executive.” [The Los Angeles Times, 12/7/23]

MSNBC (Opinion): Despite Lack Of Evidence, GOP Advances Biden Impeachment Inquiry. “It was against this backdrop that quite a few GOP members in recent weeks and months — Don Bacon of Nebraska, Dusty Johnson of South Dakota, Michael McCaul of Texas, Dave Joyce of Ohio, et al. — publicly conceded that their party simply hadn’t uncovered evidence that Biden did anything wrong. And yet, the measure passed anyway.” [MSNBC (Opinion), 12/13/23]

MSNBC (Opinion): On Impeachment, Republican Member Flubs Test On Burden Of Proof. “It appears some Republicans expect Biden to somehow come up with even more evidence of his innocence, rather than expecting the GOP to produce evidence of wrongdoing.” [MSNBC (Opinion), 12/14/23]
The Daily Beast: House Republicans Dive Headfirst Into Impeachment Inquiry—Elections Be Damned! “House Republicans are going all-in on President Joe Biden’s impeachment, with a nearly unanimous House GOP gambling Wednesday that voters will reward and not punish their impeachment inquiry into the president despite a yearslong investigation that has, thus far, not delivered any real evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors.” [The Daily Beast, 12/13/23]

And flee they should: If they had any shame, they would be feeling plenty of it after the year they’ve had.” [Los Angeles Times, 12/14/23]
The Washington Post: The GOP’s Impeachment Inquiry Starts On Shaky Political Ground. “Republicans have come up far shy of a smoking gun in the case, hyping a series of disclosures and conclusions that weren’t as advertised or were undermined by other evidence. And that’s after they’ve focused on the subject for years, dating back to Trump’s presidency, which suggests there simply might not be enough there there.” [Washington Post, 12/13/23]
