ROUNDUP: Comer Must Be Held to the Same Ethics Standards as the Rest of Congress

Apr 10, 2024

After reporting revealed James Comer’s potential book deal, the Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics seeking information on whether Comer requested approval to author a book on the impeachment inquiry. Comer has spent the past year investigating the President and his family and has not turned up a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing whatsoever. The impeachment inquiry has always been nothing more than a political stunt and a desperate call for attention, and any book written by Comer about his so-called “work” would be more of the same. Comer and his fellow MAGA House Republicans have not addressed a single issue that actually matters to Americans across the country, like access to health care or the cost of living, yet this baseless political stunt continues to be their top priority.

The Washington Examiner: Comer Possible Book Deal Spurs Democratic Group To Request Ethics Investigation.

  • “House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) could be facing an ethics investigation after a report surfaced [sic] Kentucky Republican is in talks to secure a book deal while leading Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.”
  • “The Democratic-aligned Congressional Integrity Project is requesting the Office of Congressional Ethics look into whether Comer requested approval for the reported book deal, according to a letter the group sent the office on Tuesday. The letter comes in response to a report from Axios that Comer has spoken with at least one publisher about a book detailing the impeachment inquiry.”

The New Republic: Comer Could Face Ethics Probe For Trying To Monetize Impeachment Probe.

  • “In a letter sent Tuesday to the Office of Congressional Ethics, the watchdog group Congressional Integrity Project requested a probe into Comer’s deal, citing House Rule 25 as the basis for their request. The group noted that ‘members may not ‘receive copyright royalties under a contract … unless that contract is first approved by the Standards Committee.’’”
  • “‘As Representative Comer continues to hold hearings and attempts to build the case to impeach President Biden, the American people deserve to know the extent to which he is benefiting financially. It is clear already that he has a political motive to impeach the President and it should be revealed if he has a financial motive as well,’ the letter stated.”

Newsweek: James Comer’s Potential Biden Impeachment Book ‘Troubling’: Probe Request.

  • “In response to reports about the alleged deal, watchdog group Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics requesting information about any approval Comer has sought for the book and the status of said approvals.”
  • “‘Throughout his entire investigation, Representative Comer has used his role as Chairman of the House Oversight Committee for personal and political gain,’ the letter from Kyle Herrig, group director, said. ‘He has been a frequent guest on conservative news channels pushing conspiracy theories and lies about his investigation and has used this impeachment inquiry to fundraise for his campaign. The new reporting about a potential book deal is troubling as it appears Representative Comer is planning on using his unique position as Oversight Chair to turn a profit.’”

Alternet: Watchdog Group Alleges Comer Negotiating Book Deal To ‘Turn A Profit’ From Impeachment Dud.

  • “Now, a Washington-based ethics watchdog group is accusing Comer of capitalizing on his unsuccessful impeachment saga. In an official letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics, a nonprofit anti-corruption group is requesting an update on whether the Kentucky Republican followed the law and requested prior approval for a book deal currently being negotiated with publishers.”
  • “‘The new reporting about a potential book deal is troubling as it appears Representative Comer is planning on using his unique position as Oversight Chair to turn a profit.’ Herrig noted in his letter that under House Rule 25, members of Congress have to first have any members receive authorization from the Ethics Committee before they can reap financial rewards from copyright royalties like those for a typical book publishing contract. ‘As Representative Comer continues to hold hearings and attempts to build the case to impeach President Biden, the American people deserve to know the extent to which he is benefiting financially,’ the letter continued. ‘It is clear already that he has a political motive to impeach the President and it should be revealed if he has a financial motive as well.’”
