Ron Johnson’s Political Investigation Gets Panned

Sep 23, 2020

This morning, Senate Republicans released a report “filled with old, unsubstantiated allegations and debunked” conspiracy theories in an attempt to smear Joe Biden ahead of the election.

Senator Ron Johnson, who has enriched himself while in the  Senate, reportedly used  disinformation from Russian agents the Trump Administration itself designated election-interference actors while compiling this report, but “was unable to come up with anything new or interesting.”

Here is how the “dud” of a report is being received:

“#RonJohnson’s promised ‘bombshell’ Biden-Burisma report looks to be a dud…repackages old claims.” –  Ryan Goodman, Former Department of Defense Special Counsel

“GOP’s Hunter Biden report doesn’t back up Trump’s actual conspiracy theory — or anything close to it.” – Washington Post

Even after accepting disinformation from Russian agents, Johnson and Grassley couldn’t come up with anything new or interesting on Hunter Biden washingtonpost.com/national-secur…” – Josh Rogin, Washington Post

“The report ‘is largely a compilation of previously public information — some of it rehashed anew by witnesses who already testified during the House’s impeachment inquiry last year — as well as news articles and strongly worded insinuations with little evidence to back them up.’”  – Kyle Cheney and Andrew Desiderio, Politico

“Republicans’ Hunter Biden Report is filled with old, unsubstantiated allegations and debunked theories buzzfeednews.com/article/christ…” – Buzzfeed News

“Even the WSJ: “Findings don’t support Trump’s accusation that Joe Biden sought to remove a prosecutor to protect gas firm whose board Hunter Biden served on.” #FailCharlie Sykes, conservative commentator

“Sen Ron Johnson promised his Hunter Biden/Burisma report would show Joe Biden is unfit to for office. The report concludes that Hunter Biden’s Burisma board seat was ‘awkward’ for US officials, but finds no evidence it altered US policy toward Ukraine hsgac.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/” – Todd Zwillich, Vice News

“So the worst that @RonJohnsonWI and @ChuckGrassley could described Hunter Biden’s involvement in Burisma was “problematic.” What’s the worst word one could use to describe the Trump children’s foreign business ventures?”Daniel Drezner, Professor at the Fletcher School

“Sen. Johnson’s report tries to refute its own expert?…Pg 14, Kent says ‘there was no time’ Burisma factored into policy.. Right after, report says “The extent to which Hunter Biden’s role on Burisma’s board affected U.S. policy toward Ukraine is not clear https://bit.ly/32SL4vl.”  – Marc Caputo, Politico

“Funny. Ron Johnson’s new report is out, and one of its big ‘reveals’ is that George Kent testified to concerns about Hunter Biden-related appearances of conflicts of interest. But Kent testified during impeachment that Joe Biden did nothing wrong:” –  Greg Sargent, Washington Post

“The GOP-led probe found Hunter Biden’s position on an energy company to be “awkward” for U.S. officials, but found no evidence that it affected policy.” – MSNBC
