WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week’s assassination of Charlie Kirk has unleashed partisan and divisive responses from Republican leaders that risk deepening the very divisions fueling political violence. Rep. Chip Roy’s letter calling for a new select committee to investigate “the radical left’s assault on America” represents exactly the kind of incendiary partisan theater that fuels political violence rather than addressing it. Rather than acknowledging this broader pattern of violence across the political spectrum, Roy chooses to weaponize Charlie Kirk’s death for political gain.
This is a moment that demands serious leadership from Speaker Mike Johnson to unite the country and address political violence comprehensively, not give in to Roy’s inflammatory grandstanding that only deepens the very divisions that make violence more likely. Roy’s approach exemplifies how partisan politics has infected even the most basic moral responses to violence, occurring at a time when threats against Members of Congress have reached unprecedented levels and the safety of our elected officials hangs in the balance.
In response, the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:
“Political violence is unacceptable regardless of its source, and inflammatory proposals like Chip Roy’s divisive letter only make the problem worse. Instead of exploiting tragedy for partisan purposes designed to target political opponents, Congress should focus on comprehensive solutions that address all forms of political violence with equal seriousness. We call on Speaker Johnson to reject Rep. Roy’s irresponsible proposal and instead lead a bipartisan effort to protect all Americans from political violence and lower the temperature of our political discourse through responsible leadership.”
