Polling Roundup: Trump Approval Tanks As Americans Oppose His Dictatorial Moves and Weaponization of Government Against Opponents

Feb 20, 2025

The polls are in: Trump’s approval ratings are underwater, with most voters disapproving of his month-old presidency. From unelected far-right billionaire co-president Elon Musk’s expansive role to Trump’s dictatorial moves, embrace of authoritarianism, and weaponization of government against his political adversaries, Americans are increasingly frustrated with the president as prices rise and government services like health care get slashed without any reprieve in sight. The unconstitutional chaos brought by the Trump administration is unpopular and out of control.

The Washington Post-Ipsos: Many Of Trump’s Early Actions Are Unpopular.

  • “President Donald Trump has opened his second term with a flurry of actions designed to radically disrupt and shrink the federal bureaucracy, but reviews from Americans are mixed to negative on many of his specific initiatives, and 57 percent say he has exceeded his authority since taking office, according to a Washington Post-Ipsos poll.”
  • Americans also are clear what the president should do if a federal court rules that he has done something illegal. More than 8 in 10 say he should follow the court ruling. That includes more than 9 in 10 Democrats along with roughly 8 in 10 Republicans and independents.”
  • “Overall, 43 percent of Americans say they support what the president has done during his first month in office, with 48 percent saying they oppose. Those who strongly oppose outnumber those who strongly support by 37 percent to 27 percent.”

CNN: Americans Worried By Trump’s Push To Expand Power.

  • A broad majority feel the president isn’t doing enough to address the high prices of everyday goods. And 52% say he’s gone too far in using his presidential power, with similar majorities wary of his push to shutter federal agencies and elevate Elon Musk to a prominent role in his efforts to reshape the government.”
  • Most adults nationwide, 55%, say that Trump has not paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems and 62% feel he has not gone far enough in trying to reduce the price of everyday goods. Sizable shares across party lines share the latter view, including 47% of Republicans, 65% of independents and 73% of Democrats. In CNN’s January polling, the economy eclipsed all other issues as Americans’ top concern.”

Reuters-Ipsos: Americans Worry Musk’s Campaign To Slash Government Could Hurt Services.

  • A majority of Americans worry that Elon Musk’s drive to slash the federal government could hurt services their communities depend on and believe that billionaires have too much influence on President Donald Trump’s administration, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found. Some 58% of respondents to the six-day survey completed on Tuesday said they were concerned that federal programs such as Social Security retirement payments and student aid could be delayed by Musk’s campaign, double the 29% of respondents who said they did not worry about it.
  • Americans, including some of Trump’s most ardent supporters, are nervous about the influence wealthy Americans are having on the White House after Trump stocked his cabinet and circle of advisers with corporate executives and billionaires. Among poll respondents, 71% agreed with a statement that the very wealthy have too much influence on the White House, and 69% said they think the wealthy are making money off their White House connections.”

Quinnipiac: Majority Say System Of Checks & Balances Not Working Well, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds.

  • “Less than 4 in 10 voters think the system of checks and balances between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government is working well, while more than half of voters think it is not working well…”
  • Fifty-five percent of voters think Elon Musk has too much power in making decisions affecting the United States, 36 percent think he has about the right amount of power, and 3 percent think he has too little power. […] Among independents, 56 percent think Elon Musk has too much power, 33 percent think he has about the right amount of power, and 4 percent think he has too little power. Voters 54 – 42 percent disapprove of Elon Musk playing a prominent role in the Trump administration. In Quinnipiac University’s January 29 poll, voters disapproved 53 – 39 percent.”

Pew Research Center: Giving Presidents, Including Trump, More Power Is ‘Too Risky,’ Americans Say.

  • 65% of U.S. adults say it would be ‘too risky’ to give Trump more power to deal directly with many of the nation’s problems. Just 33% take the view that ‘many of the country’s problems could be dealt with more effectively if Trump didn’t have to worry so much about Congress or the courts.’”

Gallup: Trump’s Job Approval Rating at 45%.

  • A majority (51 percent) of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump.
  • Less than one month into his second term in office, President Donald Trump’s job approval rating is at 45%, similar to his first post-inauguration reading of 47% in January.”
  • “Republicans’ widespread approval of Trump’s overall job performance and his handling of immigration, foreign affairs, foreign trade, the economy, and the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East is not enough to earn him majority-level ratings among all Americans. This is because independents’ approval of the president is weak, and Democrats’ is nearly nonexistent.”
