MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson once again caved to the demands of convicted felon Donald Trump and announced his support for legislation to defund the Special Counsel’s office. The bill is part of Jim Jordan’s “retaliation plan” to attack the rule of law, the Justice Department, and the justice system after a jury of Trump’s peers unanimously convicted the former president on 34 counts. It’s just the latest move from MAGA House Republicans to attack the rule of law and interfere with multiple criminal investigations into their disgraced former president and presidential candidate.
And, it’s a massive flip-flop for Mike Johnson who laid out the case for why defunding was an untenable attack on the justice system.
Mike Johnson, you should listen to your own advice:
“No…. That’s not something you wave a wand and just eliminate the special counsel as a provision. There is a necessity for a function like that because sometimes the Department of Justice — which is an executive branch agency — can’t necessarily, without a conflict of interest, investigate or prosecute the president who’s their boss, or the president’s family.”
MAGA House Republicans have spent the past year and a half focused on baseless investigations and ignoring the important priorities of Americans across the country to do the bidding of a convicted felon. This retaliation plan is nothing but the next play in the MAGA playbook to help distract from Trump’s crimes, harm President Biden, and help a convicted felon enter the White House in 2024.
