Background on Responsible Investing Attacks

In May 2023, House Republicans held their first oversight hearing on responsible investing and made clear their intentions to control companies’ business decisions. Through responsible investing, corporations have the opportunity to reflect their customers’ and employee values.

This push by Republican lawmakers is largely unpopular. Only 7% of Republicans think investigating US companies’ responsible investing spending should be a priority for Congress, and 79% of Americans believe corporations have a responsibility to bring about social change on important issues facing society.

But big money forces on the right, including judicial activist Leonard Leo, are pushing this agenda forward and forcing it on the American people. This hearing is just the first step.
