Washington, D.C. – Last night voters roundly rejected the Trump-MAGA agenda on Long Island in New York’s 3rd district. Democrats flipped the first of the original Biden 18 seats, held by House Republicans in districts that voted for President Biden in 2020. Republican Presidential candidate Nikki Haley agreed, saying that Republicans lost the seat “because voters overwhelmingly reject Donald Trump.” In a split screen, House Republicans voted – after a failed first attempt – to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last night too, despite not having a single shred of evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors. The combination of these political stunts, ignoring real priorities and blocking a bipartisan border security package at Trump’s direction doomed the MAGA Republican candidate in last night’s special election.

In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:

“Yesterday, the sham impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas and numerous other MAGA political stunts backfired. It’s clear that MAGA Republicans’ top goal is not to work on real solutions for issues the American people care about like the economy and the border, it’s to make sure they do everything they can to appease Donald Trump and help him get back to the White House. Poll after poll and election after election show that people are sick and tired of Republicans’ partisan games and political stunts. The remaining Biden 17 members who all voted last night for an unconstitutional impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas and the other Republicans who voted for impeachment continue these pathetic political stunts at their own peril.”
