Washington, D.C. — For years, Jim Jordan built his political identity around the claim that the Justice Department had been “weaponized” against Donald Trump, launching a special subcommittee devoted to the cause. Now that former Special Counsel Jack Smith is testifying under oath and laying out his investigations in detail, Jordan has criminally referred him to the Department of Justice over a dispute about whether his team saw the contents of lawmakers’ text messages. Rep. Jamie Raskin, the House Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat, called the referral a deliberate distortion of the facts, noting Smith’s testimony was true when he gave it and remains true today. As with everything involving Jim Jordan, it’s just more bullshit.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project Spokesperson Jeremy Funk released the following statement:
“Jim Jordan spent years insisting that federal investigators following the facts and enforcing the law amounted to ‘weaponization’ of government. Now Jack Smith is telling the public what actually happened inside his investigations and the truth about Trump’s unlawful conduct – and Jordan wants to prosecute him for it. Using a congressional gavel to threaten a prosecutor for testifying honestly is exactly the weaponization Jordan claimed to hate. His referral is revenge on behalf of Donald Trump, nothing more. After November, committee gavels will change hands and real oversight, not political revenge, comes back to the Judiciary Committee.”
