Washington, D.C. – Today, former President Donald Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury on criminal charges for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election he knew he lost and his actions leading up to the January 6th attack on our country and the Capitol. Trump’s charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States and witness tampering. This is now Trump’s third indictment in addition to his previous 37 criminal counts over the highly classified documents he hid at Mar-a-Lago and 34 felony counts of business fraud in New York in a scheme to hide from voters an affair with a porn star. Despite these indictments and a recent finding by a jury in Manhattan that he sexually assaulted a woman two decades ago, MAGA Republicans in Congress are rushing to his defense and have launched bogus investigations into President Biden to distract from Trump’s troubles. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:

“No matter what the charge, no matter how many felonies, no matter whether it’s in state or federal court, Kevin McCarthy, James Comer, Jim Jordan and the MAGA House will cover up, lie and undermine the rule of law to protect Donald Trump, as sure as the sun rises in the morning. These same Republicans are attacking and intimidating the FBI, the Department of Justice, and local prosecutors all because these law enforcement agencies are doing their job to hold Trump accountable for his criminal conduct. MAGA Republicans are willing to set aside every priority the American people care about – the rule of law, the peaceful transfer of power, access to affordable health care, the cost of living, and job creation – to do Donald Trump’s bidding.”
