Washington, D.C. – News outlets, including the New York Times and CNN, among others, are reporting that a Manhattan Grand Jury has voted to indict Donald Trump for his role in illegally concealing hush money payments ahead of the 2016 presidential election to cover up an affair he had with a porn star. Trump’s lawyer confirmed the indictment to CBS. In response, Congressional Integrity Project Executive Director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump is beginning to face the consequences of his actions today, but this is just the first step in showing to the American people that nobody – including a disgraced former president – is above the law. The 2016 episode was Trump’s original sin in his many attempts to undermine democracy. But despite all of the evidence and a decision of a grand jury, MAGA Republicans are ignoring the facts and defending Trump at all costs. They have already announced investigations designed to obstruct and threaten the Manhattan District Attorney that are being coordinated by Trump himself. These are the same people who defended Trump for inciting a violent attack on our Capitol on January 6th to overturn an election he, and his fellow Republicans, knew he lost. But in the end, it won’t be MAGA Republicans in Washington deciding Trump’s guilt or innocence but a jury of his peers in a court of law.”
