Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, calling on the Speaker to investigate the Trump family’s influence peddling with respect to its business dealing with China while Trump was president and his daughter and son-in-law were senior White House officials. The call for an investigation coincides with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S. this week for the APEC Leaders’ Meeting. The letter outlines the vast history of influence peddling and family corruption perpetrated by the Trump family in China while Trump was president and calls on the Speaker to formally begin an investigation into this corruption.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“Earlier this year, James Comer said he and his House Oversight Committee would investigate former president Trump’s influence peddling. However, Republicans have not sent any letters, requested any information, or announced any hearings on potential investigations into the Trump family’s influence peddling and corruption. Instead, the MAGA House GOP has wasted the entire year investigating the Biden family and has not turned up a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing. Clearly, Comer and the House GOP have the wrong priorities and as Speaker, it is time for Mike Johnson to formally launch an investigation into the corruption and influence peddling of the Trump family.”
