Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Integrity Project sent a letter to Rep. James Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, calling on him to formally investigate possible foreign influence peddling involving former president Trump as well as the blocked investigation into it. A recent investigation by The Washington Post revealed that Egypt’s president may have sought to illegally inject $10 million into Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. An investigation into the donation was launched in 2019, but top Justice Department officials appointed by Donald Trump shut it down. Now that Comer’s investigation into President Biden and his family is over, CIP calls on Comer to turn his attention to Trump’s corruption.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“Last year, James Comer stood in front of the press and said he would investigate former president Trump’s influence peddling but after over a year, he has not sent any letters, requested any information, or announced any hearings. The Justice Department officials who blocked an investigation into possible foreign election interference and campaign finance law violations must be questioned by Congress, particularly by the House Oversight Committee chaired by James Comer. Now that his investigations into President Biden have ended, it’s time for Comer to focus on real conflicts of interest, influence peddling, and weaponization of the federal government.”
