All this month, the Congressional Integrity Project is introducing one of Donald Trump’s staunchest allies – Representative James Comer. Just last month, the American people rejected the extreme MAGA agenda and said they want our leaders to focus on solving the real problems they face. But MAGA Republicans aren’t listening. As soon as they won the House, they immediately turned to the Trump playbook of political attacks, stunts, and partisan warfare. Investigations under the new Republican-led committees will be conducted following the Trump playbook: divisive and politically motivated attacks on President Biden, his family, and his administration at any cost, all to increase Comer’s own power to pursue the radical agenda of his MAGA allies.
James Comer will always do the bidding of Donald Trump. He has advanced outlandish conspiracy theories and made excuses for former President Trump time and time again. Comer perpetuated bogus accusations of voter fraud and election integrity, similar to Trump’s “Big Lie.” He made excuses for Trump interfering in Department of Justice investigations. Comer said Trump “may have been joking” when he asked then-FBI Director James Comey to stop investigating former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
- Comer Ridiculously Claimed Trump’s Possible Obstruction of Justice Was Only a Joke; Said Trump’s Pressuring of FBI Director Comey to Drop Federal Criminal Charges Against Michael Flynn Was Just an Example of Trump’s “Kidding.” Rep. Comer stated in 2017 that President Trump’s attempt to pressure FBI Director James Comey into dropping the criminal investigation into Trump’s former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, was merely an example of Trump’s kidding and not an attempt to obstruct justice.” While other Republicans in Washington have begun raising questions about Donald Trump’s actions and his alleged attempt to persuade former FBI Director James Comey to go easy on Comrade Michael Flynn, Kentucky’s own Rep. James Comer, who is on the House oversight committee, is making up excuses for him. FBI sources told the New York Times that according to a memo Comey wrote shortly after an Oval Office meeting with the president in February, that Trump tried to get Comey to drop the investigation into former campaign aide and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and his relationship with Russia. […] Get ready to laugh your britches off. This will absolutely crack you up. Comer told Dave Weigel of the Washington Post that Trump may well have been joking to Comey. ‘It looks different on paper,’ the first term legislator from Tompkinsville told Weigel.” [Louisville Courier-Journal, 5/17/17]
- Comer is a “Trump Acolyte” and a ‘Trump Tool” with No Interest in Fair Investigations. Rep. Comer has built a reputation in Kentucky and on a national stage as an acolyte of former President Trump and has no interest in conducting fair investigations should he become chair of the House Oversight Committee. “Comer is a Trump acolyte or if you prefer, a Trump tool. He is about as likely to mount a probe of Trump, or any other Republican for that matter, as the Jacksonville Jaguars are of winning the Super Bowl. There is no reason to expect fair play from this guy. Comer, should he ascend to the chair, also made it clear he intends to pummel Biden cabinet secretaries early and often for sins both real and imagined, telling Business Insider, “We’ve got problems with just about every one of them with respect to oversight.” [Northern Kentucky Tribune (Opinion), 12/3/21]
The American people have already rejected this extreme MAGA Republican agenda time and time again and are tired of Comer’s lies. They deserve more; they deserve better than Trump’s Chief Apologist.
