Washington, D.C. — Capital Research Center is out with a new report smearing nonprofits for engaging in basic, legal voter registration work, and their claims instantly fall apart under the most basic scrutiny.
CRC attacks a NonprofitVOTE guide for supposedly helping groups “get around” federal rules — but the guide is actually more conservative than the law requires, and explicitly tells nonprofits they’re barred from any partisan activity. CRC also brands the National Urban League and UnidosUS as partisan operations, even though CRC’s own research arm, Influence Watch, admits the League doesn’t endorse candidates, and UnidosUS invited Texas Republicans, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Ken Paxton, to its 2026 conference. CRC’s complaint about the Hispanic Federation’s “massive” registration drive amounts to roughly 16,000 voters registered per year across 43 states and territories.
Meanwhile, CRC ignores organizations like Franklin Graham’s collection of nonprofits, which have collected more than $350 million in federal grants on one hand while promoting a “Planning and Prayer Guide” and registering voters with the other. CRC’s own president has argued that legal limits on church political activity should be scrapped entirely.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project Senior Adviser Jeremy Funk released the following statement:
“Capital Research Center wants Americans to believe nonpartisan voter registration is some kind of scandal. It isn’t. Here’s what’s actually happening: a partisan attack operation going after Latino and Black civic groups for doing legal, nonpartisan work, while giving a total pass to a right-wing evangelist raking in hundreds of millions in federal money while running his own turnout operation. This cooked up BS is in service of one thing: helping an unpopular President rig an election which he and his party are almost certainly going to lose.”
