Washington, D.C. — California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed today that Donald Trump’s Justice Department is investigating him and his wife, with federal agents knocking on the doors of family friends and former employees, all in search of a nonexistent crime. Newsom joins a list of targeted Trump opponents that already includes James Comey, Jerome Powell, Letitia James, and Adam Schiff.
For years, Republicans dined out on the fictional “government weaponization” under the previous administration. Jim Jordan demanded investigations. Mike Johnson even tried to shield January 6 insurrectionists from prosecution. Now, Trump’s DOJ is going after a sitting governor and top political opponent, without a word from James Comer, Jordan, or Johnson.
In response, Congressional Integrity Project Senior Advisor Kyle Herrig released the following statement:
“James Comer, Jim Jordan, and Mike Johnson spent the better part of four years crying ‘weaponization’ after the Justice Department prosecuted the people who attacked the United States Capitol. They made it their whole identity, with hearings, subpoenas, and wall-to-wall cable hits. Now Donald Trump has turned his Justice Department into a personal vendetta machine, targeting a sitting governor because he might run for president and because he mocks him on social media. MAGA Republicans who wouldn’t stop talking suddenly have nothing to say, and it’s because they know Trump is guilty of the charge they used to slander the previous administration. Trump and Republicans are wrecking our democracy just to get back at their political opponents. Someone should investigate that — and in just over six months, they will.”
