WASHINGTON – The House Homeland Security Committee is holding yet another baseless hearing today to attack nonprofits that serve vulnerable communities. Their latest sham spectacle features fringe right-wing activists whose sole purpose is to parrot Trump’s extremist rhetoric on immigration and distract from his and the GOPs disastrous agenda.
Ahead of today’s hearing the Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement:
“Today’s hearing is a disgraceful abuse of congressional power by House Republicans, who have abandoned any pretense of legitimate oversight in favor of extremist grandstanding to appease Donald Trump. The hearing’s inflammatory title reveals this for what it is: a predetermined sham investigation aimed at vilifying organizations that save lives, and distract from the very real problems Republicans created like ripping away health care for millions of Americans.
“This hearing isn’t oversight—it’s a coordinated political attack on the rule of law and on groups that serve vulnerable communities. Instead of calling credible experts, Republicans have stacked the hearing with fringe right-wing conspiracy theorists peddling partisan talking points, not facts. These reckless attacks are a dangerous assault on civil society that serve no purposes other than and on the American values of compassion and justice.
“This isn’t governance—it’s deflection. Republicans are attacking NGOs to hide their lack of any serious, constructive response to the challenges they claim concern them.”
Here are examples of some of the comments the GOP’s “expert” witnesses have said:
Mike Howell: President, The Oversight Project
- In 2024, Mike Howell’s Oversight Project was caught releasing deceptive videos about supposed immigrant voters that even the Republican Secretary of State in Georgia called “a stunt.”
- Mike Howell believes Kwanzaa was “pumped up by the FBI to drive a wedge in the black supremacist movement.”
- Mike Howell was a contributor to Project 2025.
Ali Hopper: President and Founder, GUARD Against Trafficking
- Ali Hopper and her business partner Dr. Jared Sadulski routinely speak about human trafficking issues at events sponsored by right wing organizations like America’s Future – where Lt. Gen Michael Flynn serves as Chairman of the Board – and Americans for Prosperity.
- Ali Hopper has been involved in Mike Flynn’s “Get in the Fight” tour and trainings, where attendees “pay $40 to hear Mr. Flynn offer tips about spotting victims and traffickers.”
Julio Rosas: National Correspondent, Blaze Media
- In June 2025, Julio Rosas wrote an article suggesting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was “tied” to the suspect in the political assassination of a Minnesota politician. In reality, Walz was not “tied” to the suspect, and had merely reappointed him to a government advisory board he was first appointed to by a Republican.
- In September 2024, while reporting from Springfield, OH, Julio Rosas told Glenn Beck the issue of Haitian migrants possibly eating ducks, geese and pets was “an issue that has been raised to the city for months before this got national attention.” This was a conspiracy theory that was roundly debunked after being raised by Donald Trump in a nationally televised Presidential debate.
