STATEMENT: House Homeland GOP’s Sham NGO Investigation Is a Baseless Distraction from Trump’s Disastrous Agenda

Jun 11, 2025

WASHINGTON — The Congressional Integrity Project released the following statement today in response to the House Homeland Security Committee’s partisan and baseless investigation into NGO funding:

“This investigation is nothing more than a baseless, partisan stunt meant to distract from House Republicans’ failure to address the real challenges facing American families—including Trump’s tax giveaways to the wealthy, his inflationary tariffs that are driving up prices, and their relentless campaign to take healthcare away from millions.

“Attacking civil society groups sets a dangerous precedent and represents a direct threat to our democracy. These organizations provide critical services, support vulnerable communities, and help strengthen the fabric of our society.

“Instead of offering solutions for working families, Republicans are manufacturing yet another bogus investigation to deflect from their own policy failures and inability to govern.

“This sham investigation is built on propaganda from groups like the Center for Immigration Studies—a far-right hate group with zero credibility. When Congress relies on materials from designated hate groups, it’s not oversight—it’s a witch hunt. Americans deserve real solutions, not divisive political theater.”

Just last week, Center for Immigration Studies’ Executive Director Mark Krikorian alleged that several faith-based charities were “NGOs Gone Wild” during a DOGE committee hearing with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. In his prepared remarks, Krikorian noted that “one CIS analysis found that more than 30 faith-based nonprofits were among the UN’s hundreds of NGO partners — representing Jewish, Lutheran, Seventh Day Adventist, Catholic, and nondenominational evangelical organizations.”

Now several faith-based organizations are targets of this sham investigation, including Catholic Charities USA, which was specifically called out in Krikorian’s testimony.

Background on the Center for Immigration Studies

  • The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) is a Southern Poverty Law Center designated hate group.

  • The Center for Immigration Studies was determined to be a hate group after repeatedly circulating white nationalist and antisemitic writers in its weekly newsletter.

  • CIS “was founded by the late John Tanton, a Michigan ophthalmologist turned population-control alarmist whose racist beliefs stirred him to create a network of organizations with a simple agenda: heavily restricting the immigration levels to the United States in order to maintain a white majority.”

  • The US Department of Justice is currently investigating the Center for Immigration Studies over allegations the organization misrepresented itself to obtain a pandemic loan from the Small Business Administration.
