WASHINGTON, DC – According to the Wall Street Journal and other news sources, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent granted Elon Musk and the DOGE commission access to highly-sensitive personal data of millions of Americans. DOGE includes senior executives from Musk’s companies, his personal lawyer, and investors close to his companies. Congressional Integrity Project Senior Advisor Kyle Herrig issued the following statement on behalf of the Checks and Balances War Room:
“Elon Musk, on a war path to withhold federal dollars, just got access to the payment system that makes payment for federal programs, contracts and federal assistance that millions of Americans depend on, such as Medicare and Social Security benefits. Musk, who bullied the Treasury Department’s highest-ranking career official with more than 30 years of experience to step down, is unvetted by Congress and unelected, and yet he now has access to highly-sensitive personal and business information.”
This latest move by the Trump administration threatens the financial stability of hard-working Americans by jeopardizing trillions in government payments and gives billionaire Elon Musk and his friends a powerful tool to potentially punish enemies and reward friends.
This action takes the Trump Administration’s actions to impound funds passed by Congress to a whole new dangerous level. If Congressional Republicans cared at all about doing oversight of the Administration to protect their constituents’ interests, among the questions they would ask would be:
- Does Elon Musk and DOGE now have access to the Social Security numbers and other personal information of millions of Americans?
- Have the unsecured electronic devices carried by Elon Musk and his DOGE team compromised the identifying information agents working within our national security apparatus?
- Does Elon Musk have access to cutting payments to his business rivals with federal government contracts?
