Washington, D.C. – This morning, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced he would resign at the end of the month. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“Kevin McCarthy represents everything that is wrong with Congressional Republicans and bears much of the responsibility for the rise of the cult of MAGA and Trump. He gave Trump a lifeline after January 6, he empowered the grotesque Marjorie Taylor Greene, he launched a bogus impeachment inquiry into President Biden with no evidence of wrongdoing whatsoever, he’s given aid and comfort to insurrectionists by dismissing the work of the January 6th Select Committee, he weaponized Congressional oversight to benefit Donald Trump, and the list goes on. Kevin McCarthy did real damage to America and to Congress and his legacy will bear that out. Good riddance.”
