Washington, D.C. – Today, Matt Gaetz announced a new bill to block funding for Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office and his investigation into twice-indicted Donald Trump over his role in the January 6th insurrection. This new bill, designed to protect Trump from criminal investigations, follows yesterday’s news that de facto Speaker of the House Trump held a strategy session with House Republican leadership about the Department of Justice’s investigation into him. In response, Congressional Integrity Project executive director, Kyle Herrig, issued the following statement:
“Just one day after Donald Trump made calls to his friends on the Hill before a likely indictment in the DOJ’s January 6th probe to prevail upon his MAGA allies to interfere with the case, Republicans on the Hill are doing exactly as they were told. House Republicans are not even trying to be subtle anymore. Time and time again, they have made clear that they do not care about the real issues Americans care about like lowering costs, creating jobs, and increasing access to health care, instead they would rather spend their days providing cover for their failed former leader Donald Trump in a desperate attempt to get him back in the White House no matter the cost.”
